My first Half Marathon Results – A mess, but I’m happy
1:55, not the best result by far. I roughly did a little better then half the 2000 runners in the Malta Land Rover Marathon 2009. It was not as tough as I first anticipated, but it was the longest run I’ve ever done.
I ran the half without any physical training, I guess you could say that I had mental stamina, but no strategy. I wasn’t even sure If I felt like running that morning. Disaster!
In the first 2/3rds of the race I was picking out the runners I would like to reach and calmly increasing my pace to reach them. Things were going great, they gave out more drinks and refreshments then I expected which really helped. When I reach the down hills I started picking up pace, thinking that the finish line was close.
Up until then things where great, I was high in spirit and was even cheering some people on. But then I hit the wall! by the time I realised that I had much more road left it was too late . I was tempted to stop but kept on going, barely making it. The graph speaks for itself.
Conclusion … next year I am going to take the half marathon much more seriously. I’m going to prepare myself physically and gather all the logistics before I sign up…. duh!
